Mishra looks back on his short-lived fame as a bizarre blip in his career. Today, it remains a cult hit, sampled on Wiley and Emili SandГ©вЂ™s вЂњNever Be Your WomanвЂќВ and lending itself to the title of the 2007 Michelle Pfeiffer film I Could Never Be Your Woman. Yet unsurprisingly the major label system didnвЂ™t know what to do with a Marxist bedroom pop musician, and subsequent follow-up singles failed to chart. Mishra ended up signing to Chrysalis, a sublabel of EMI, and releasing the album Women In Technology through the imprint. It was one of, if not the first bedroom-produced pop song to claim the honour. From there it blew up, hitting #1 at the end of January 1997. Despite this, the EP managed to end up in the hands of radio presenter Mark Radcliffe, who gave вЂњYour WomanвЂќ вЂ“ its opening track вЂ“ a spin on BBC Radio 1вЂ™s flagship breakfast show while he was covering for Chris Evans.

Mishra made it entirely on his own with a zero budget вЂ“ he used a cheap sampler bought with money borrowed from his girlfriend, and he sequenced it on a program given away for free on the cover of a magazine. His >Abort, Retry, Fail? EP, released by the relatively unknown indie label Parasol in 1996, could have easily have drifted into obscurity. He certainly didnвЂ™t fit the image of a typical popstar: he wasnвЂ™t white, he came up through the decidedly un-commercial twee pop scene, heвЂ™d been straight edge since he was 16, and he was a radical Marxist. Mishra was born in India but moved to the UK as a young child, with his bandвЂ™s unusual name referring to the predominantly white town of Derby that he grew up in. By the end of 1991, they were down to just one member вЂ“ singer, keyboardist, and founder Jyoti Mishra. White Town formed in 1989 as a conventional guitar band but quickly shed members over the following year. How it made it to #1 is a different matter entirelyВ вЂ“ the unconventional story behind both the songвЂ™s creation and the man who createdВ it makes it one of the more unlikely successes in British pop history. Its electro-funk groove and cryptic lyrics are enough to satisfy both dancers and thinkers alike, while its infectious hook вЂ“ a trumpet line sampled from a 1932 record by crooner Al Bowlly вЂ“ is the sort of thing that worms its way into your head and stays there for days on end. If you think of it with regard to the '80s, well, it's probably here.Listening back to White TownвЂ™s вЂњYour WomanвЂќ, itвЂ™s easy to see why it topped the UK charts 20 years ago. But the show's music is still completely in-tune with the vibes of the original films. Cobra Kai might find Johnny Lawrence ( William Zabka) and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) 34 years after their Karate Kid days living in the 2020 (ok, 20) present. That doesn't mean the spirit isn't still there, though.

But, damn it, Cobra Kaiis here, and through two seasons has managed to have a badass soundtrack full of '80s bangers, and somehow hasn't played that old theme song even once. It's hard to think of music from The Karate Kid without thinking of the classic theme song from the original, 'You're The Best' by Joe Esposito.
